Welcome
to Ralph’s
Corner! This is the first issue of my
tech-Tips column for you, the printer
operator. These tips are designed to help you
reduce service issues and assist you in performing
simple maintenance to keep your printer performing
at its best.
This month’s tips concern printer care
and preparation.
Reduce Downtime By Having Necessary Supplies On
Hand
Keep a steady
stock of supplies, such as Maintenance Kits,
on hand to be ready for installation when the
printer needs them. You would never let
yourself run out of toner, so why have an unusable
printer because it needs a Maintenance Kit
that is on order, or worse, on Back-Order.

What should
you keep on hand?
For Impact
Printers:
Ribbons and
Ribbon Shields.
For Laser
Printers:
Toner,
Drum,
Developer and
Maintenance
Kits

General Cleaning
Be sure to power off your printer first!
1) For Impact Printers, open up your printer and vacuum
out any paper dust or hole punches that may
be building up inside the printer. These
can interfere with the paper sensors and/or
the print modules. Use an air can to
assist with those stubborn hard to get at areas. Be
sure to have the vacuum nozzle in hand to catch
the contaminants as you blow them out. Replace
the ribbon as needed.
2) For Digital Printers, never use an air can to
blow the printer out. Toner has a nasty
habit of getting everywhere. Vacuum the
areas that are easily accessible. You
may use a very lightweight paintbrush to loosen
the toner and a lightly moistened cloth to
wipe the paper feed rollers and guide plates. Be
sure to use only water with a very small amount
of hand soap to clean the rollers. Never use
alcohol. This will dry out the rollers
and cause a service call to have them replaced.
